古くなった服や古着を藍で染め直してみよう

今日はAiAiiでアップサイクル藍染めしたい人に何を考えたらいいの話したいと思います。私が最近染めましたものも紹介します。

Today I will explain what you need to consider when choosing a vintage item to dye and upcycle with natural indigo.
I include some examples from my recent shopping expedition. 

最初は、リサイクルショップに行って染めそうな服を探します。
色でわけているので見つけやすい。
白い服じゃなくてもいいけど今回はそうにした。
他の色なら薄い色がいい、黄色だたら緑ぽっく青色できるとか、ピンクだったら紫になるかもしれない。

First I went to the 2nd hand shop, where clothes are helpfully separated into colour.
The base colour doesn't have to be white, but that's what I chose this time.
You can try using any lighter shade such as yellow clothes to make green, pink clothes to make purple etc.
and have fun mixing it up.

一番大事のチェックは生地の材料。100％コットンやリネンが一番染めやすい。
プラスチックの糸は染められない（ポリエステルなど）。

服の重さも考えたほうがいいです。天然藍染めのことは、重い生地だと染料をいっぱい吸って染代が高くなります。
大きなセーター、コート、ブランケットなどは注意してください。

私が選んだのはボタンワンピース、ワンピースとポンポンストールも買いました。      

持ち込み染め代は　1g  = ￥25

ボタンワンピースが￥500  だったけど重さ 428g なので染め代￥10,700

ワンピース￥300  重さ160g染め代 ￥4000

ポンポンストールが￥330 （ちょっと汚れた）重さ 140g だから ￥3500 染め代. 

It's important to check the label,  ideally 100% cotton or linen.
Materials containing man-made fibres probably won't take the dye. 

You should also think about the weight of the item.
We charge by the gram, because the more dye a fabric absorbs, the more expensive it becomes.
So a big sweater, coat or blanket might end up being pricey. 

1g X ￥25＝cost of dyeing (includes tuition)

The button dress I chose is big, it only cost ￥500  from the shop but it weighs 428g so the dyeing cost is ￥10,700

The other top cost ￥300  and it weighs 160g so the dyeing cost is ￥4000

The pompom scarf cost ￥330 (it had a slight brown stain in one corner) It weighs 140g so costs ￥3500 to dye. 

ボタンの色と縫いの糸も考えましょう。
レーベルが100％コットン書いてても、スティッチはよくポリエステル、ということは、染ってみても白いまま。
紺色染めてかったら特に目立つかもしれない。
白い糸あっても全然気にしない人もいるので自分の味で。

Another thing to consider is any stitching, buttons, lace trim etc.
When a care label says 100% cotton, usually, the thread which stitches it together is often not.
This means that polyester thread can sometimes stand out, especially if you dye the garment dark blue.
Some people don't mind though, so it's up to you. 

もう一つの注意はトートバッグがよく付いている防水や防汚コーティング。
藍染めと生地のバリアなので染まりにくい。
家帰ってきてから水の滴を置いて、吸収するかどうかよく見てみましょ。
吸収しない場合は服を洗濯機に洗ってみて、乾いてからまだ無理だったらお湯で煮る。
今回は洗濯機だけは十分だった。

Tote bags and other white items sometimes have a kind of coating to keep them stain proof or slightly waterproof.
This is a problem if you want to dye it.
You can test the fabric by dropping a few droplets of water onto it and see if they sink in or sit on the surface.
If they sit on it, it's worth trying to wash, or boil the fabric before you start.
This time I just washed them in cold water. 

このワンピースはポケット、バトンいっぱいだから藍染めの模様はシンプルことにした。
水色よりちょっと濃いで４回ぐらい全体的に染めてから下の方だけ藍色にした。

This dress has pockets, gathering, buttons, quite a lot going on so I decided to keep the dye really simple, with just 2 tones of blue.

下のほうだけ７か8回そめました

I used our pulley system to leave the bottom of the dress dangling in the indigo over and over, to achieve a dark blue, dyed a total of 7 or 8 times.. 

このワンピースはレギンスやジーパンに着ようかな～と思った。
楽しくて夏っぽいがターゲット。
チャコペンで曇を書いて,縫い絞りして糸を引っぱった。
4回ぐらい染めまして空みたいな水色にできました。

This T-shirt/dress is plain so I chose to make a fun pattern, something summery and light blue, a sky-scape with fluffy clouds.
I drew the clouds on and stitched around them. After I wet the fabric I concealed the clouds with plastic and rubber bands. 

Then I dyed it about 4 times.

ファストファッションを調べるとやっぱり、環境も人によくないことが多くて、自分の買い物の選択がよく考えてほうがいいと思います。

押入れがもう履いているものがずっと着れば、直せばいいですね

リサイクルショップにいったら、新しいファストファッションよりいい

天然藍染めで染めれば、古着が新しくなる！

When you look into fast fashion it’s clear that it is often bad news for the environment, the people who work in it and their communities. If you are able to make careful choices when you shop you can make a difference. 

We can look at the clothes we already have at home and wear them for longer, or fix them. 

We can buy 2nd hand.

When we dye with natural indigo we can make old clothes new again!

We can make beautiful natural colours.  

We can make joyful patterns.

Natural indigo is anti-bacterial.

Every item is totally unique.

We can make happy memories from our experience.

We can keep the garments we dye for a long time and they will be precious.
